Moving on with your life after finalizing a divorce is never easy. Even if you knew your marriage was not going to survive another day, it can still be difficult to accept that you must now go back to living alone. It can be even more difficult when there are children involved in the equation. So, how does a divorce impact your mental health?

Many people who go through a divorce will experience an increase in stress. This is a stressful situation in life, even when you know you cannot fix the marriage. You will have a lot of meetings with your attorney, your spouse and their attorney and might even have to go to court to resolve the issue. All of this causes plenty of stress on even the calmest, most relaxed people.

You could also experience a decrease in your satisfaction with life. Coming to the realization that your marriage failed can be difficult for many people to endure. You might not be satisfied with where you stand right now, but it doesn’t mean you can’t rebound and make an improvement.

Some people who experience divorce deal with a bout of depression. They like to isolate themselves from family and friends because they might be embarrassed about their situation. You need to surround yourself with loved ones, friends and even talk to a doctor about your pain.

Going through a divorce has its ups and downs, with a lot more downs than you might expect. You need to be prepared for the emotions you will experience and know how to deal with them. Make sure you seek help from loved ones and even join a support group.
