Don’t compare your divorce to anyone else’s

It’s often said that misery loves company, and this might explain why someone who is going through a divorce will often try to find others who have gone through the same circumstances. While finding a support system that can understand what you’re going through is important, this can also lead to an urge to compare your situation to another. But, that can cause you more stress because every divorce is unique.

Trying to compare what’s happening to you with what happened to someone else is problematic. Small differences in circumstances can lead to a different application of a specific law, so comparing your divorce to another person’s might lead to poor decisions on your part that come back to haunt you later.

Turning to your peers for advice during the split is understandable, but don’t take legal advice from anyone other than your attorney. After all, that’s what you are paying them for. Working closely with your lawyer can help you to learn more about what possibilities you face in the divorce. They can provide you with advice about a variety of topics, such as splitting up property, working out a custody arrangement, what to avoid posting on social media and a host of other things.

Once you have completed the divorce process and the transition afterward, don’t focus on what’s going on with your ex unless it directly impacts you. This might help you to keep your stress down to a minimum since you only focus on ways to improve your own life so you can better enjoy it.
