How do I communicate effectively during divorce?

On Behalf of | Oct 4, 2019 | divorce

Filing for divorce does not have to be as difficult as everyone makes it out to be, especially if you know how to communicate effectively with your soon-to-be former spouse. The way you communicate with your partner during the divorce process will determine if things will go smoothly or take a different path. So, how can you communicate effectively during divorce?

Don’t be afraid to set boundaries and let your spouse know about them. This includes times of the day when you can communicate with your spouse as well as the method in which you will accept communication (call, email, text, etc.).

Only respond to communication with your spouse when you are able to do so. If you are running errands, in a work meeting, driving or otherwise busy; do not rush to respond to a communication from your spouse. This will only unnerve you and possibly result in an argument. Responding when you can will prevent anger and other issues from seeping into the conversation.

Stay in the present. Do not keep dwelling on the past, even if you are still going through the divorce process. You need to stay focused on moving forward with the divorce and coming to a resolution in a timely manner. Dwelling on the past will only cause resentment and other arguments to develop.

Communication is key in any relationship. Just because you have filed for divorce, it doesn’t mean that you can stop trying to communicate effectively with your spouse. If anything, now is the time to have the best communication you’ve ever had with your spouse, so the process goes smoothly.
